Advantages of Greenhouse Gardening

As fall is quickly gives way to winter, many people shut down their gardens until it gets warm again. While it is true that many winter climates do not support growth of vegetation, there is an alternative for people that want to garden year-round. Greenhouses are becoming increasingly popular, and greenhouse gardening provides many benefits for budding gardeners.

The primary benefit of owning a greenhouse is having the ability to extend the gardening season. During the winter months when the soil and outside conditions would be too harsh for anything to grow, a greenhouse can be warm enough to support lots of different flowers and vegetables. For fruits and vegetables in particular, greenhouse gardening allows you to plant seeds much earlier than your outdoor environment would allow. When spring comes along and your outdoor climate warms up enough to support your garden, you can simply transfer your fruits and vegetables outside. Similarly, when the season starts to change and temperatures drop, you can bring them back into the greenhouse. This will allow you to have your own fruits and vegetables almost year round!

Greenhouses also allow you to experiment and try to grow things that are typically foreign to your area. Because you can control not only the temperature but also the water that your plants receive, you can branch out and try some new things. Maybe you want to grow an herb or plant that isn’t common in your area While you can’t simply grow anything and everything you want in a greenhouse, they at least give you a more hospitable environment that will allow for a wider range of things to grow.

After the initial investment, greenhouse gardening can also help save you money. By allowing your fruits and vegetables to grow for longer stretches of each year, greenhouses allow you to spend less money on fruits and vegetables at your local grocery store. Additionally, in the controlled environment that a greenhouse provides, you can plant from seeds much earlier in the year. Planting seeds is a much cheaper alternative than buying small plants or seedlings from your local nursery.

Between giving people a way to potentially save money, allowing people to experiment with new herbs and plants, and extending the gardening season, there are a handful of reasons to look into greenhouse gardening. Perhaps the biggest reason to consider greenhouses is also the most simple – greenhouses give people the opportunity to spend more time doing what they enjoy. That is what having a garden is all about!
