A useful tool to any serious gardener, greenhouses come in a variety of sizes, materials, and prices. The type of greenhouse you buy will be determined by what you wish to achieve and how much you want to spend. You can invest thousands to put up a full scale, professional greenhouse; most home gardeners, however, no matter how serious, rarely need to spend that much. Smaller hobby sized greenhouses are capable of doing just about everything a full scale unit can do, but do it at a fraction of the cost.
PORTABLE GREENHOUSES
As the name suggests these are greenhouses that can be moved around with relative ease. Made of easily broken apart elements of either plastics or metal, the frame needs to be taken down yearly so the cover of polyethlylene plastic doesn’t get ruined during the winter months. While the largest of these greenhouses can reach dimensions as large as 50ft x 100ft, and are no longer really portable, they can be easily set up and taken down. They also fulfill the intent of a greenhouse by providing you a sheltered and warm place to extend your growing season to some degree.
PERMANENT GREENHOUSES
Frequently available in a kit format, simple permanent greenhouses offer a lot of choice and benefit for the home gardener. Available in a number of shapes, such as a lean to, an A frame, or Quonset hut, you can typically find something that will fit into your landscaping and still be affordable. Greenhouses are further separated into temperatures–cool, warm and hot–based on your goals for the house. If you just want a place that will protect your plants from frost, a cool house will do; if you want to grow plants all winter long and enjoy fresh produce, you will need a hot house.
No matter what type of house you want, the internet is an excellent place to start your research.
